Sailboat renovation

In this category you will find our blog posts related to our sailboat renovation, all posts except the engine renovation. We are renovating our sailboat Anne-Mon so that we can cross oceans with her.  When we bought the sailboat she had been abandoned for 10 years and there are a lot of work to get her in a good condition. We do all work ourselves and hopefully this will inspire someone that it is not impossible to restore a sailboat and be able to sail around the world with an older sailboat. We have also done a complete renovation of our engine, a Volvo Penta MD19, and all posts related to the engine renovation can be found under the category Engine. • Companionway door renovation – part one

One thing we want to have completed before the summer starts for real is the companionway door we have had for our sailboat. The old one we have is just a plywood with some insulation on it. It is leaking and is looking pretty boring, and with the newly renovated sliding hatch we need a matching companionway door. The door is pretty thick and will feel as a proper door when finished. Next up with the companionway door will be to add the metal frame, continue sanding, add windows and finally varnish it! 🙂 As mentioned before we have started to paint the cockpit, hopefully the weather is with us…

  • Hoisting the sails and first sailing

While working with the cockpit we also decided it was time for hoisting the sails for the first time. First one was the furling head sail. We hoisted the furling head sail a calm evening. We noticed that the sail was to short, so we needed a extensing on the halyard. The following day we decided to hoist the main sail and try sailing our boat for the first time. We sailed around in central Stockholm for a while. It was Petras first sail ever  and Thomas first sail in a couple of years. The wind wasn’t very strong which was perfect for our first sail. Our sailboat isn’t exactly…

  • Our mistake of painting with gelcoat

After many days of preparing the cockpit for painting by adding putty and sanding, we were finally satisfied with the surfaces. We cleaned the cockpit thoroughly with both water and acetone and added masking tape. Our plan was to paint with gelcoat first and then add another layer of topcoat above. The reason for this is because if it doesn’t cover properly the topcoat most be sanded first before the second layer can be applied. If only gelcoat were to be used it would harden properly and will remain a little bit sticky. We had discussed earlier if we should use a two component paint instead but since we had…

  • Renovation of leaking sliding hatch

We have had trouble earlier with our leaking sliding hatch , which we started to repair a couple of weeks ago, read more about part one HERE. When the linseed oil we added had hardened 14 days later we started to varnish it. After we had added 8 layers of varnish we glued the Isiteek, which is fake teak made out of plastic, back on the hatch and then it was time to start with repairing the leakages. In parallel to working with the leaking sliding hatch we have also started working with the door to the cabin. We currently have a provisional one but the previous owner had started…

  • The mast stepping

The time had finally come to do the mast stepping! 🙂 If you want to read more about our rig, see our blog posts about the rig HERE. Before starting the mast stepping we had to do some final preparations before getting started. We had to mount the windex, change to LED-bulbs in the lanterns, mount the new electrical horn we bought and do a final check of the masts to make sure everything looked good. When we felt satisfied with the masts it was time for the mast stepping. We had some friends with us to help during the process, since we never done this before and since we…
