Sailboat renovation

In this category you will find our blog posts related to our sailboat renovation, all posts except the engine renovation. We are renovating our sailboat Anne-Mon so that we can cross oceans with her.  When we bought the sailboat she had been abandoned for 10 years and there are a lot of work to get her in a good condition. We do all work ourselves and hopefully this will inspire someone that it is not impossible to restore a sailboat and be able to sail around the world with an older sailboat. We have also done a complete renovation of our engine, a Volvo Penta MD19, and all posts related to the engine renovation can be found under the category Engine. • Rope overhaul and cleaning halyards

We got a bunch of different kind of ropes for the rig when we bought the boat, but most of them ha been laying outside on the mast for several years and needed an overhaul and to be cleaned. We went over the halyards in search for weaknesses in the ropes and wires. Then we started cleaning the halyards. Some of the halyards are made entirely of rope and those we cleaned in a washing machine, just a normal 40 degree wash (celsius) with less centrifugation than an ordinary washing program. We added vinegar essence as fabric softener, which makes the fabric soft, without wearing them out to much. Unfortunately…

  • Rig for ketch rigged sailboat

It was time for us to start an overhaul on the rig for our ketch rigged sailboat.  As it is ketch-rigged we have two masts; one bigger main mast and a smaller one, called a mizzen mast. The mizzen mast is positioned in the cockpit and is much smaller than the main mast. The main mast is keel-stepped, which it means it goes through the deck. Main Mast We started with the main mast, which is made out of aluminum and has one pair of spreaders. First up was to loosen all straps that held the stays and shrouds together. We went over the shrouds and stays, took a close…

  • Mast butt renovation

The weather is not on our side this spring, it way to cold an rainy for us to work with plastic repairs right now, so in the meantime we started prepare for rigging the masts. We have a keel-stepped main mast. As we understand it, it is very hard to get rid of all leakages in a keel-stepped mast but we will do everything we can to prevent leakages. A sign of old leakages is our rusty mast butt. We will get rid of the rust and paint it so that it can withstand potential future leakages better. Now the mast butt is ready to have the mast connected, which…

  • Continuing with the plastic repairs

On Saturday the sun was shining and we were finally able to continue with the plastic repairs. As mentioned earlier, we had removed the window we had in the cockpit since it was leaking a lot (read more about it HERE). Now it was time to seal and reinforce this area with fiberglass and polyester. We started with the plastic repair late summer last year, if you want to read more about our previous plastic work, check the tag Plastic repair. We have chosen to use polyester for the plastic repairs in the cockpit, the reasons why we choose polyester over epoxy are: The price, polyester is cheaper than epoxy…

  • Sliding hatch renovation

It was time for some sliding hatch renovation. Our sliding hatch was broken in some places and was also leaking a lot through the window. We do not want any leakages at all and there have been a lot of water coming in to the boat through this hatch and it is something we really want to fix before the summer season. After adding the linseed-oil we left the hatch alone for fourteen days. We did this so that the oil will harden completely. Now it has gone more than fourteen days since we did the oil treatment and we will start varnishing the wood and figure out how to…
