We left Sweden August 2020 and sailed to the Caribbean and back again. On this blog we have shared everything from preparations and renovations before departure to our experiences when being out sailing. On the blog we also share what information and costs you need to know if planning a sailing trip.

In October 2023 we bought a new sailboat, which had been standing for 10+ years. On our YouTube channel and Instagram you can follow our renovation progress.

    September 10-18, 2020 While we waited for the engine parts we spent our days fixing other stuff on our boat and also explored the island we were stuck at. There where bikes that was free to use so we took advantage of that and took a tour around the island. As we bought a bunch of food before our departure from Stockholm we had plenty of food to eat during our stay (no food store on the island, only able to buy small stuff).     September 7-10, 2020 We spent one night in Gislövs läge before our departure out of Sweden, towards Denmark. On Monday morning,  September 7th, we left the marina. Strong westerly winds were approaching the night towards Tuesday so instead of going around Denmark towards Kiel we chose to go between the islands Falster and Sjælland to take cover from these winds. Mast is off! 😃 With the engine back up running Mast is off! 😃 With the engine back up running we could finally unstep the mast (we had to motor for a few hours to another marina to do the actual lift so working engine was necessary 😅) Although we will go over all the rigging when the mast is down, the main reason for taking it down is that we have to redo the mast foot, as it is in quite bad shape😊 so that is a project we will tackle ahead 😊 Next up now is to make a cover for winter and continue working with the doghouse (yesterday we posted a video about the design for the doghouse, go check that out if you haven’t already)⛵️
The engine is up and running again! 😃⛵️ A c The engine is up and running again! 😃⛵️ A couple of weeks ago, we discovered a leakage from the seawater pump, despite having fixed it earlier. When we removed the pump, we found that the bearings were completely destroyed, and the pump shaft had been spinning uncontrollably. While inspecting the issue, we also noticed some play in the injection pump shaft. This had us worried that the bearing problem might have caused damage to the injection pump as well. To be safe, we removed both the seawater pump and the injection pump for further checks. Thankfully, the play in the injection pump turned out to be harmless, and there was no damage. We repaired the seawater pump—this time following every detail by the book to ensure it’s solid. Once everything was reinstalled, we did a test start, and the engine ran beautifully! 🤩 Now we’re ready to make another attempt at taking the mast down and covering the boat, hopefully before the next snowfall arrives ❄️ #sailboat#sailinglife#boatwork#boatlife#winter
This weekend, we had planned to take the mast down This weekend, we had planned to take the mast down, but things didn’t go as expected ⛵️ The reason? We ran into some engine issues… Just as we were about to set off (we need to go to another marina to take the mast off), we noticed the problem—luckily, before we’d departed. Whenever we’ve run into unexpected issues with the boat, we’ve always said, “Well, at least the engine is working”, guess we jinxed it 😅😅 The whole weekend became an emotional rollercoaster as we tried to gauge the severity of the problem. In the long run, we dream of doing an electric conversion, so our motivation to do any extensive work on the engine right now is pretty low… But, luckily (after some hours investigation), we found that it is fixable, and we’re hopeful we can get the engine running again soon and take the mast down before winter fully sets in ❄️ More about the engine later on! We are ready to start our winter refit projects 😃⛵️ and our biggest upcoming project is building a doghouse and arch 😊 and here we are looking at both design and construction ideas. For the construction we are investigating if building the doghouse with resin infusion, a method were you lay the fibers dry and then pull resin though the layup with vacuum 😊 Really excited to start next phase of our sailboat refit 😃😃⛵️ #sailboat#sailboatrefit#diy#instasailing#youngcruisers#sailingcouple

Some footage from our 24 hours sail we did last we Some footage from our 24 hours sail we did last weekend, out on the Baltic Sea and around the Gotlandic Sand Island (Gotska Sandön)⛵️ We left the marina together with three of our friends right before lunch and headed south through the archipelago, between all shallow and small islets. We started of with quite little wind but it picked up during the afternoon 💨 We reached open water and watched the sunset before we sailed into the 12 hour long, cold night. The night started cloudy, with very little stars visible. We passed Gotska Sandön around midnight, we did a jibe and turned back home. After midnight the clouds scattered and we got to see some stars ✨ We reached the outer archipelago about an hour after sunrise and enjoyed a sunny sail through the archipelago back to the marina ☀️ Throughout the night we had around 18-22 knots of southwesterly winds and we could sail on a beam reach both there and back again 😊😊 This was an opportunity for us to test our new sailboat on a longer passage - not only sailing performance and evaluating our new DIY keel. But also live ability; can we cook food? How is sleeping on the boat during passage? And so on 😊 So far we are really happy with our boat 😃 some more adjustments and she will be perfect! 🤩 During autumn/winter/spring we will continue working with refitting. Some snaps from our sail this weekend ⛵️ We we Some snaps from our sail this weekend ⛵️ We went out with some friends, had some calm downwind sailing on Saturday until we reached our destination for the night 🌙 we enjoyed the sun and found some cute animals on the island 🐮 🐑 And then we had upwind sailing back home the day after, an opportunity to really test our DIY keel which we cast ourselves during the spring, and so far it seems to work really well 😃😃 Now we are preparing for upcoming sail this weekend, which will be little bit of an adventure (if the winds allow it) ⛵️⛵️ #sailing#sailboat#sailinglife

Some pictures from our first real sail 😃⛵️ Some pictures from our first real sail 😃⛵️ Although we went out and hoisted the genua one time before it wouldn’t really count as real sail, as the wind died out almost immediately 😅 One evening about a week ago was more reliable wind - 6-8 knots from southeast. We sailed back and forth in the bay, cruising at 6 knots (7 knots at best). We got to test a lot of stuff; tacking, handling the back- and checkstays and maybe most importantly - our DIY lead keel we made for the boat during spring 😃 and it so far it feels like it does a really good job at what it is supposed to, being a balanced counter-weight for our sails 😊 (but ofc some more testing is needed for full evaluation) And another thing that we were a little bit worried about how it would feel sailing this big boat. Would the boat feel too big for us handle? But that wasn’t the case - the boat felt surprisingly easy to handle and not ridiculously big 😃 at least not in this nice, calm conditions we had for our first sail ⛵️ So conclusion is - a very good start and first real sail 😃 looking forward to get to know our boat better and do some more autumn sails 🍂🍁 #sailing#sailboat#instasailing#sailinstagram#boatwork
Out first sail! 😃😃⛵️ First time in 15 ye Out first sail! 😃😃⛵️ First time in 15 years our sailboat got to be powered by sail. Not a very long though, as the wind died almost immediately after we furled out the genua 😅 but still sort of counts right? We did however get a few minutes sailing with engine turned off ⛵️one reflection afterwards is that we have a really big genua 😅 you feel quite small next to it… When the wind died out completely we decided we to just drift for a while, make some dinner and enjoy the beautiful sunset 🌅 Now we hope for another opportunity to come out and do a longer test sail, with the main sail hoisted as well 😊😊 and some beautiful autumn weekend sails ⛵️🍁 #sailing#sailingcouple#youngcruisers#seapeople#sail#sailboat#sailinglife#saillife#instasail#sailinstagram
First time in about 15 years that this beautiful s First time in about 15 years that this beautiful sailboat has sails hoisted 😃⛵️ Very easy for the mind to wander and dream about sailing into the sunset, but then realize that the lines are still attached to the dock 😅😅 We have wanted to hoist the genua sooner, but we have had an offset between two sections for the furler. With that offset we couldn’t hoist the swivel (which the headsail is hoisted with and makes furling possible). If you have seen our videos you know that we made some attempt of taking the sections down, but without success. Instead we have done a bit of a quick and dirty solution to make it possible to hoist the swivel (and a sail with it) 😊😊 With this solution (and mainsail also test-hoisted) we will FINALLY soon be able to do our first sail 😃😃 but first we have some securing-the-boat-for-sea to take care of… Refit = boat is a complete mess 😅😅 (And yes, a proper go-through of the furler (or buying a new one💰💰) is on the agenda. And we have 4000 screws to remove 😅😅 When we And we have 4000 screws to remove 😅😅 When we bought our sailboat some months ago we were quite certain that we would remove the teak deck and replace it with non-skid paint. The sailboat has been standing on land (pretty much uncovered) for about 15 years and the teak is worn down. But… After some consideration we have decided to make an attempt to save the teak deck. By using the method of replacing screws with just plugs we can sand the teak deck further and hopefully reach a result we are happy with 😊 With this method we will rely on the glue to keep the teak in place, which should hopefully be sufficient. As far as we can tell they have been properly glued so we are not too worried about the planks falling off. The ones that are in really bad shape and loose we will simply replace as we did with the middle piece. Another concern is of course if the screws have been leaking into the core of the deck over the years. Of this we cannot be certain that it hasn’t happened but so far we haven’t found any indication from the screws (we have had other leakages in the deck from stay attachments).
